I want to buy a Contax or a Leica camera, what do you suggest?

Question by Mere Mortal: I want to buy a Contax or a Leica camera, what do you suggest?

Dr. Sam, I did know that.

Indeed, Contax makes an AF rangefinder with interchangeable lens. Can you believe that!?
Copy that.

I have a Leica IIIf with a Summicron.

Would love to find a Contax G with a couple of the lenses. Dr. Sam, you have good taste!

Is the meter on top of the Leica M3 inconvenient?

Question by Ian w: Is the meter on top of the Leica M3 inconvenient?
Is it better to have a handheld one?

Best answer:

Answer by fhotoace
Well for the cost of the Leica meter for your M3, you can get a heck of a good incident/reflective combination light meter.

Since the Leica meter is integral to the shutter speed dial and external flash shoe, you will not forget it in the heat of the moment.

I have both that meter (mounted on an M2) and a old Leitz handheld (I had to buy the new non-mercury batteries for them both)

I also have a Sekonic studio meter and a new Sekonic L-308 combination reflective, incident and flash meter.

Im just wondering,
My friends and I are planning an immature weekend of reminiscing our childhoods together, as one of us is going to move soon. We are gonna make a stop by the Fun Station (Its like a Chuckie Cheese for Bigger kids… It’s got laser tag, and mini golf, and bumper BOATS, and Go carts…) And i am wondering if anyone knows which Go cart is the fastest?

Does the Panasonic DMC-LZ6 have a Leica or a Panasonic lens?

Question by bikerdude: Does the Panasonic DMC-LZ6 have a Leica or a Panasonic lens?
I have a digial camera – Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ6. I thought that all Panasonic Lumix cameras have Leica lenses. But this says its a “LUMIX DC VARIO” lens. The other similar models say they have a “Leica DC VARIO” lens.

Also it doesn’t say “Leica” on the front of the lens body like the other Lumix cameras.

The Panasonic website and manual aren’t much help either.

So, if they are two different lenses, is the Leica a lot better than the other?

Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by What?
Leica doesn’t make any lenses for Panasonic Lumix digital point and shoot cameras. Under a licensing agreement, Panasonic is allowed to imprint the Leica brand name on products that meet manufacturing and quality standards deemed appropriate by Leica.

“Leica is a registered trademark of Leica Microsystems IR GmbH. The Leica DC lenses are manufactured using measurement instruments and quality assurance systems that have been certified by Leica Camera AG based on the company’s quality standards.” (1)

Additionally, the Panasonic Lumix LZ is the company’s budget-series of compact digital cameras so the LZ6 certainly doesn’t measure up to the Leica brand name simply from a marketing perspective. So, it doesn’t mean that it’s a bad lens or a bad camera just because it isn’t labeled with the famed moniker.

The same is true with Kodak and Samsung with Schneider Kreuznach lenses and Sony with Carl Zeiss lenses. Quality optic manufacturers do not have the capacity to mass produce parts for consumer goods.

Q&A: Does any one have any feed back on the Bushnell Night vision monocular?

Question by 1hunter1@sbcglobal.net: Does any one have any feed back on the Bushnell Night vision monocular?
I saw one at Sams Club for 150Bucks and was thinking of getting one.

For generation 1 stuff they’re not bad. The range is pretty good but I couldn’t see hardly anything without the IR light on. But once you turn that on it works very well. Battery life is better than average too. Oh, and with the IR light on, to other people wearing night vision gear it’ll look like you’re shinning a flashlight.

looking to buy a remote starter for my Leica?

Question by Danielle: looking to buy a remote starter for my Leica?
I just bought a Leica DSLR camera and am looking to buy a remote starter for it. I tried searching online for Leica ones, but they only had one on Amazon for R model cameras which I do not have. Can I use just any remote starter for my Leica or does it have to be special just for my camera model?

Best answer:

Answer by OMG, I ♥ PONIES!!1
This question is fascinating… but I can’t answer it without further details.

1) By remote starter, you mean a shutter release, right? A simple wireless device or a cable, for when the camera is on a tripod and you’re standing right next to it. Or do you need something more advanced than that… for automatic time lapse photography, triggering the shutter from hundreds of yards away, hooking the camera up to a motion detector, etc.?

2) I doubt you have a Leica dSLR. Leica’s only dSLR options are their digital back for the old R8 and R9 film SLR cameras – which you say you don’t have – and the $ 23.000 medium format S2 which isn’t shipping yet. That leaves Leica’s (digital) rangefinders and, more likely, their (digital) point & shoot cameras. What’s the model?

I’ll check back later.

Never mind. I just saw your other question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091026173711AAJifBM

Like Steve said there, the V-LUX1 is basically a rebranded Panasonic DMC-FZ50 point & shoot camera: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=leica_vlux1%2Cpanasonic_dmcfz50&show=all

Here’s a cheaper cable release from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MOKPNQ
Why not get that one and just glue a cardboard red dot on it. Bada bing, some more professional Leica gear on a budget!
