When it comes to Leica gear, the options are smaller than they used to be.

First of all, B&H and Adorama will not work for you, as they are too big to have the special attention that is required for Leica.

Of the smaller and “Leica” oriented places, Tamarkin New York (www.tamarkin.com) used to be a powerhouse until they left about a year ago. Ken Hansen was another good option but he too is no longer in business.

Of the remainder, you have Photo Village (www.photovillage.com) – very decent – dealing with Leica equipment. Will is quite knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with.

Kurland Photo (www.kurlandphoto.com) is another dealer of high end brands like Hasselblad, Rollei and Leica. You will get proper answers to your questions about Leica gear. Craig Williams (ex manager of Tamarkin New York) handles the dealings and he is very knowledgeable about Leica – especially M gear.

As per reference and experience;

I wanted to sell some R lenses back in the spring and my friend referred me to a new place that he dealt with before, called Kamerahaus. (www.kamerahaus.com)

Their website looks pretty basic, it looks like an online buying portal. Basically, I sent them a list, they gave me a quote (which was slightly higher than the others at that time), I said OK I want to do it and they mailed me a prepaid UPS shipping label to ship the items to them, which blew me away.

I shipped everything, they got it next day and 4 hours after the UPS delivery, I received a tracking number for my check.

They seem to be operating like Used Camera Buyer (www.usedcamerabuyer.com) but I was satisfied with the speedy service and generous evaluation.

Of course, you always have the option to sell it privately if you can. You will always get more for your gear.

-You can post it on forums (heard stories like people keep you waiting at a Starbucks late night and never show up)

-You can sell it on ebay – not recommended. (may tike time, some buyers buy and don’t pay, a lot of fraudulent people who claim they never received it and get chargeback from paypal, now you’re out of the gear and still have to pay the chargeback. Ebay and Paypal commissions will kill up to %15 of the final price)

Hope this information works for you. Good luck with your sale.

I have a new Bushnell Trophy Cam 8mp trail camera and keep getting white out pics during the day time?

Question by Rhino: I have a new Bushnell Trophy Cam 8mp trail camera and keep getting white out pics during the day time?
How can I fix this? I turned the sensitivity down to normal and faced it south so it wouldn’t be hit directly from the sun. The camera is getting a lot of near white out pics where you cannot tell what is in the picture around 1-2 hours before dark. Are there any ways to fix this? I am unfamiliar with infrared cameras. Thanks!!

its possible something like a squirrel is running over the camera, I would move it to another tree or figure something out to discourage climbing over it. Also, a would move it so that its facing more south east, just in case the setting sun is grabbing a funny angle on the lens.

I don’t think I’ve had one picture out of focus on my rangefinder. I’ve never missed a shot because the camera focused on the wrong thing or I was too slow to manually focus. They are faster than the best digital focusing because they don’t need to do anything.

Lets say is sunny, you just set to f:16 and you’re walking down the street looking for interesting people to pass you by; well you set your rangefinder dial to ummm, 5 ft. Now anything within 5ft or further will be in perfect focus just as quick as you can pull the trigger. If you had about 1.155 of a second to get you camera in the air and snap because you saw something happening that fast you could just swing the camera off your shoulder and snap. Another thing is they are less imposing than an SLR. Walk around with a D1 and 18-200 sticking it in peoples faces will get you noticed; not the goal of street photography. They are quiet. You can get away with it anywhere.

Some have leaf shutters so you don’t get as fast a shutter speed as an SLR. I wouldn’t suggest them for sports.

what’s the difference between a range finder and a normal camera?

Question by extant: what’s the difference between a range finder and a normal camera?
what’s the difference between a range finder and a normal camera?

pros & cons?

Answer by AWBoater
Technically, a range finder was a 35mm camera that had a split viewfinder with part of the “split” coupled to the lens. As you looked at the subject you were photographing, it would be misaligned, top to bottom. As you manually focused the lens, the two halves would be aligned when the focus was correct.

With today’s autofocus digital cameras, I don’t think I have seen anything like a range finder. If a digital camera is using that term, it is a misnomer.

Should I buy a DSLR or a good rangefinder camera?

Question by holacarinados: Should I buy a DSLR or a good rangefinder camera?
I have one main question and one secondary question.

I don’t like SLR’s because they’re too big, have shutter vibration, make loud sounds (that distract people, even animals for nature photos). I’m looking into a higher end rangefinder $ 700 range. Can anyone give me a reason why I should think otherwise (I’m not all that impressed that when you aim an SLR you see the exact parameters of your shot.

Second question is do you think the large size of an SLR makes people automatically think the camera must be better and take better photos than a smaller format camera?

Best answer:

Answer by smallbluepickles
I’m assuming by rangefinder you are talking about digital point and shoot (P&S) like the Canon G7. It has a classic rangefinder look and feel.

If I had a choice between the G7 or the XTi for my main camera I would have to go with the G7. I think it goes without saying that the G7 is smaller and less obtrusive and will be more friendly to carry around and get less noticed than the DSLR. Therefore I can use it in lots of situations.

People do act differently around the larger cameras. I think people feel more self concious when they have a big telephoto zoom lens pointed right at them than say a small P&S camera. It’s psychological and it is somewhat conditioned in people that they expect a photographer who uses a DSLR will shoot a picture of them in a more critical way than if the photographer used a P&S which is viewed as fun and informal.

You would use a DSLR when you want the best image quality and a versatile camera for all lighting conditions. For professionals they must have the best equipment for their work so they almost always use DSLRs and not P&S.
